Protect Stateless Malaysian Children's Right to Nationality

We, the undersigned Malaysian citizens, are saddened by the fact that many stateless Malaysian children often face daily discrimination and abuse in our society just because they do not possess an identity document. No children deserve such undignified treatment as the failure to secure a legal status at their arrival to this world are definitely not their fault.

We urge Malaysian government to protect stateless Malaysian children’s right to a nationality enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The government must also fulfill its obligation as a state party to Child Rights Convention, which requires the government to realise the right to nationality of stateless child in accordance to national law. *All reservations of CRC made by the government should be lifted.*

We sincerely appeal to the Prime Minister of Malaysia Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad to support our three demands :

1) Approve all citizenship applications of stateless Malaysian children and legally adopted children within one year, should they meet the constitutional requirement that one of their parents is Malaysian;

2) Ensure transparency in processing citizenship application by providing explicit reason when the National Registration Department rejects an application;

3) *Similarly, approve all citizenship applications of foundling/abandoned children in Malaysia within one year, should they have not acquired any other nationality within a year of birth as listed within the Federal Constitution;*

4) To amend laws and regulations in relation to citizenship application to prevent reoccurrence of such unjust cases in the future.

Note : Family Support Group Stateless Malaysian Children is an initiative of a group of Klang family members, who have been fighting for the right to citizenship for their stateless children enshrined in constitution for years.
